The “Meles Cup” Ethiopian women’s Knockout Championships Cup final takes place today in the town of Adama, featuring the much awaited clash between hot title favorites Commercial Banks and underdog Dedebit FC. Shitaye Sisay leads the top scorers list by a mile.
Commercial Banks, by far the strongest women side in the country, reached the cup final today after a 2-0 convincing win over the strongest side from the regions, Hawassa Town, on Thursday. With eleven National Team players, including Shitaye Sisay and their renowned Head Coach Birahnu Gizaw at the club, Banks appears to be the side that could stay in full command of women’s football in the country for a long time, and are certainly hot favorites to take home the historic trophy today. The other cup finalist, also the second best side in the Championships, Dedebit FC got through to the final stage by destroying Sidama Coffee 5-2. Two goals each from strikers Senait Baruda and playmaker Birtukan G/Kristos , allowed Dedebit to sail through, and they have gone past the different stages without a single defeat, making them strong contenders for the title. The midfield powerhouse Birtukan, as the inspiration to the underdogs, leads her talented squad members (eight of which are in women’s National side) into today’s Cup final showdown at Adama’s Abebe Bikila stadium and quite a dramatic finale is expected.
Shitaye, who is lethal, leads the top scorers’ list with the highest ever goal tally of 25, while team mate Rehima Zergaw is second with 14 and Birtukan is in third place with 13 goals. Shitaye Sisay and Birtukan G/Kristos are also front runners for the season’s ’Best Player’ award.
