British Council supports Ethiopia’s education sector


British Council Chair, Sir Vernon Ellis said the Council will further strengthen support to Ethiopia’s education sector. Following talks with President Girma Woldegiorgis, Sir Ellis said that the Council plans to assist programs being implemented by the civil society towards success of ongoing development activities in Ethiopia. The Council had distributed solar educational equipment among 200 schools, he said, adding, it will further support the education sector. Sir Ellis recalled his visit to Ethiopia ten years before and expressed belief that the country will achieve its goal set to reduce poverty within short period. President Girma on his part said that Ethiopia and Britain have historical relation based on mutual interest. The President on the occasion called on the international community to provide support to ensure sustainability of existing growth being registered in Ethiopia. Sir Ellis, who was Chairman of English National Opera in 2005-2012, heads British Council offices in 110 countries. The Council is operating in Ethiopia during the last 70 years.
