The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) acknowledged National team Coach Sewnet Bishaw’s achievement by raising his salary and adding a lucrative benefit package. Assistant Coach Seyoum Kebede’s services are apparently no longer required by EFF midway through the 2014 Brazil World Cup final qualification campaign.
The Coach’s pay rose to 40,000 birr, which is an increase of 10,000 birr on his previous monthly salary, plus a benefit package worth 10,000 birr covering personal costs such as fuel allowance. For a football country never to take its local national team coaches seriously unless he is a foreigner, the increment was applauded by many in the sport family. According to Adane Belay, a football fan, the increment does not mean much when compared to the salary foreign coaches command, but it shows the Federation’s gratitude for Sewnet’s achievement in steering the Waliya-Antelopes back in to the continent’s Cup finals after an absence of three decades. “It is about USD 2,000 a month and it is peanuts compared to the salary Scottish-Nigerian Ofem Onura used to receive, which was USD 12,000 a month,” he added. It is remembered that the National team Coach’s monthly salary rose to 30,000 birr from 8,000 birr following Ethiopia’s qualification to the Africa Nations’ Cup final in South Africa. In the meantime, the Federation has apparently sacked Coach Seyoum Kebede, Assistant to Sewnet Bishaw, in the qualification campaign. According to the weekly Amharic news paper “Reporter”, the EFF executive committee had reached an agreement to dismiss the Assistant Coach. It is not clear whether a replacement would be assigned or there was no need for an assistant coach. However, it is understood that Coach Sewnet Bishaw has a big say on matters regarding his staff. The Ethiopian National team is in the middle of the 2014 World Cup finals campaign in Brazil, which makes such a decision open to questions, apart from the fact that the Assistant Coach certainly has helped the team, together with the Coach, in getting where they are today.
