Commercial Bank wins the “Meles Cup” Championship title

Commercial Bank won the Ethiopian women “Meles Cup” Knockout Championships. Dedebit’s Birtukan G/Kristos was acclaimed as the ‘Best Player’ of the tournament, while Shitaye Sisay claimed the top scorer spot.
When the Knockout Championships Cup finals, played by  eight sides in two groups,  came to an end on Sunday at the host town of Adama (Nazareth) around 94km east of the capital, it was the duel of the giants Commercial Bank against Dedebit FC. Both sides incorporate a great number of National team players and having never lost a game in the championships, they were expected to put on quite a performance, and they didn’t disappoint their respective fans at all. With a cautious approach to the game from both sides at the start, it was Bank that took the attacking initiative, with their lethal striker Shitaye Sisay in action. Dedebit’s engine Birtukan G/Kristos at her best in midfield, Dedebit tried to dominate, but the favorites defense was in total control. The game ended 1-1, with Birtukan scoring for Dedebit and, as usual, Shitaye netting the goal for Bank. It was left to a penalty shootout to decide who the champions were. Thanks to National team goalie Dagmawit’s triple save from the spot kick, Bank won the Championships title after a 4-1 score line, taking home the historic trophy.
Striker Shitaye Sisay received the 10,000 birr money prize as top scorer of the tournament with a record 26 goals. Birtukan stood second with 15 and Rehima Zergaw was third with 13. Although some expected Shitaye could double as the ‘Best player’ of the tournament, she only pocketed the 10,000 birr prize money, and the award was presented to Birtukan G/Kristos. The penalty shootout hero Dagmawit received 7,000 birr as the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ of the Championships. Bank Coach Birhanu Gizaw once again won the ‘Best Coach’ award and a prize of 10,000 birr. Sidama Coffee came third after winning the play-offs.
