One of the biggest celebrations Ethiopia will be hosting this year is the 50th Anniversary of the African Union (AU), formerly the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
This huge celebration will start on the 11th of May, with two days of festivities planned for the duration. Get ready for a weekend of shopping, music and basically a relaxing family outing during the daytime and a big concert in the evenings at the Millennium Hall. This event, which is being prepared to mark the beginning of AU’s 50th Anniversary, will feature different artists from Ethiopia as well as various African countries.
“We want this to be a celebration that everybody will be able to enjoy; that is why we are doing the bazaar during the day and then the concert in the evening,” said Chachi Tadesse, Head of Chachi International Arts Management Plc., the company organizing the event.
It was stated that the bazaar will include a variety of activities for entertaining kids as well as adults in the form of talent shows, along with DJ music. Food will be aplenty, with stalls for selling various items like T-shirts, jewelry and different handcrafted items.
“I believe it is an opportune time for Ethiopians to learn about Africa and its journey in the last 50 years. I also want to encourage, especially the young and vibrant African workforce to embrace the “I am an African” perspective, so that they can develop a wider world view and well-rounded problem solving skills as they strive to make positive changes within their respective communities,” stated Chachi, at a press conference held at the Intercontinental Hotel on Tuesday. She also urged all Ethiopians to successfully commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the AU.
The bazaar and concert is expected to be attended by well over 5,000 people on each day. It was also stated that the concert will feature Haile Roots and his band and DJ Yemi, as well as various artists from Angola, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and elsewhere. Entrance fee for the bazar will be 50 birr and 200 for the concert.
