2013 ‘Every One Races’ in Hawassa takes place today

More than 3,000 participants are expected in Hawassa this weekend for the fourth edition of ‘Every One Races’. The Every One Campaign, now in its fourth year, is an attempt to reduce child and maternal mortality and is being spearheaded by the Save Children Alliance.
The event includes two elite races for men and women club athletes with a total purse of 80,000 birr and a first prize of 14,000 birr. The elite races, which are staged on a flat three-lap course, present a good and early opportunity for athletes to impress selectors ahead of the World Half Marathon Championships that will be held later this year.
Around 100 top athletes from Addis Ababa are making the journey south in pursuit of fast-time records. Other races at the event include a 21km race for the non-elite, a 7km mass race, and two children’s races for those under the age of 11. All races will start and finish in the center of town in front of St Gabriel’s church.
