Shimeles Bekele’s high volley from 20 yards gave Saint George a place in the final knockout stage to face old Rival Defence Force, a team that went through the semi final with flying colors demolishing Muger Cement. The Horse Men are the hot favorites to the title.
Defense Force reached the Cup’s final stage after a 4-0 demolition over Muger Cement that surprisingly reached the semi final. The Army side that has been winning consistently, managed another easy yet astonishing victory booking a place in the finals. Gebremedhin Haile’s formidable strike force found the back of the net in four occasions with Firew Seyoum, Bedasso Hora, Medhane Tadesse and Diriba Chala the scorers, while the defense and their goalkeeper hardly busy except watching the slaughter from afar. The other semi final clash was a derby match between arch rivals Saint George and Ethiopian Coffee. The sold out stadium was filled with loud and energetic supporters making the game exciting. It took an hour before the single winning goal came from play maker Shimeles Bekele who sent an unexpected twenty yard volley to find the back of the net.  With abundance short passes, Coffee dominated the ball possession. Except for one controversial decision by the referee who denied penalty to Ethiopian Coffee, no serious mistakes were seen throughout the game.
A win would have been a blessing for care taker coach Khalid Mohammed to help his side reach the cup final. The win also helped under pressure German head coach Michael Kruger who has thrown away the golden opportunity of reaching champions’ league group stage after a 2-2 draw against Zamalek over the weekend. 2013 Ethiopian knockout cup final showdown is between Saint George and Defence Force. The date is yet to be announced.
