Commercial Bank was crowned the winners of the Ethiopian Women “Meles Cup” first ever Knockout Championships title after an aggregate 5-1 victory over Dedebit FC. The second leg showdown superstar Rehima Zergaw was at her best, bagging a hat trick in the historic victory.
The strongest women side in Ethiopia under their much-talked about Coach Birhanu Gizaw, Commercial Bank FC was hot favorite for the double since winning the league title two months back. With less prolific players than their counterpart and a two goal first-leg deficit, Dedebit expected to mount some sort of challenge even though it has few star players of the likes of ‘player of the year’ Birtukan G/Kristos capable of changing results single-handedly. Much determined to take home the double titles from the start, Commercial Bank FC, spearheaded by the “Player of the Match” Rehima Zergaw, featured a superior performance with the underdogs hardly able to respond in kind. Rehima opened the score line, but Senait Baruda came up with a magnificent equalizer before half time. Birhanu must have done some talking back in the dressing room, because in the second half, Bank came out with guns blazing in an all-out attack mentality making their opposite’s defense quite busy. Rehima added her second then drove the final nail into the coffin coming up with a hat trick and was the heroine of the tournament, helping her side Bank win the first ever Ethiopian Premier league “Meles Cup” Knockout Championships title after an emphatic aggregate 5-1 victory. The second strongest women side in Ethiopia, Dedebit, ended up as runner-up in both the Premier League and Knockout tournaments.
