The organizers of the biggest road races in Africa announced that over 40,000 participants will take part in the 2013 Great Ethiopian Run (GER) race weekend, of which 37,000 participants are expected to take part in the annual 10km International race, while 3,500 children will take part on the eve of the main race. The 13th edition of the Great Ethiopian Run is taking place on Sunday, 24th November. This time, GER is partnering with Nova International, one of the biggest race organizers in the UK and is the organizer of the great run series, including the Great North Run and the Great Manchester Run. The partnership will help raise international publicity of the event and mobilize a big number of international participants. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), the title sponsor of the event, has been supporting the event for the past three years. Despite the flourishing of private commercial banks in recent years, CBE has remained in the lead in terms of assets, deposits, customer base and branch network. Currently, it has 675 branches throughout the country. CBE has launched mobile and internet banking recently, making banking accessible to many without physically going to the bank.
For the second time this year, an early registration system will help to provide participants with a race T-shirt of the right size. T-shirts will be produced according to the sizes of those registered. Early registration also avoids the rush on buying places, which the organizers have experienced in the two months before the race, and will help to reduce black market T-shirt sales.
The registration of Individual participants starts on Monday, the June 3, at eight selected CBE branches while group participants can register at the office of the Great Ethiopian Run. Registration fee is 100 birr and will go up to 140 birr after the 1st of July. When participants register, they are expected to bring their identification cards along and they will given a coupon that they will use during the race week to collect their race T-shirts. T-shirts will be distributed to individual participants at the Addis Ababa Exhibition Centre and Market Development Enterprise from November 20 to 23.
