City tax collection doubles
A new 265 million birr town hall is being built in Hawassa.
“The new building is modern and will accommodate all the different sectors. We expect it to be ready in two years’ time,” said Yonas Yosef, Mayor of Hawassa.
The Town Hall is the latest in a series of major infrastructure projects launched in the town in recent months, including a 170 million birr road building programme, announced in April.
Work has started to build cobblestone roads and flood canals, upgrade gravel roads to asphalt and installing street lighting and traffic signals. More than 60 million birr has been allocated to construct 25km of cobblestone roads in the town – so far 7km has been completed.
Work has also started to resurface gravel roads with asphalt at a cost of 47 million birr. Almost half of this work has been completed and it is expected to finish early next year.
30 million birr has been allocated for the installation of new lamp posts and 26 million is being spent creating new flood canals.
Tax revenues in Hawassa have almost doubled in the last year, according to the town’s mayor.
It collected 400 million birr in the first half of the 2012/13 budget year, an increase of 191 million, compared with the same period in 2012.
The mayor put the increase down to new systems for collecting taxes and an increase of taxpayers in the town.
