The 9th edition of the Confederation Cup kicked off yesterday with eight nations coming together in two groups. The winners of their respective continental championships plus the host nation Brazil are in the tournament also known as “Festival of Champions” which was launched in Saudi Arabia sixteen years back and its popularity growing.
Although the hosts l took the title for a record three times, this time around it is World and European champion Spain who are favoured to win the trophy. Two nations each from Europe and Latin America and semi-finalist Nigeria, who is in the tournament for the second time, is the only African representative. The hosts Brazil, Asian champions Japan, former champions and CONCACAF representative Mexico and Italy comes together in group “A”. Title favourites Spain faces Latin American champions Uruguay, Oceania champions Tahiti and African champions Nigeria.   
Although the tournament kicked off yesterday between Brazil and Japan, the group’s second match between Mexico and Italy takes place today at Rio de Janiero while the group two opening match featuring Spain and Uruguay takes place at Recife. One of the much-anticipated matches, Brazil versus Mexico, will be held on Wednesday at Fortalleza, while Nigeria opens its campaign on Monday facing Tahiti.
