Beat Making Lab is based on one principle: empowering the youth to bring about change. Established in 2012 by Pierce Freelon and Stephen Levin, the goal of Beat Making Lab is to empower young musicians all over the world by giving them a voice and allowing them to use their talent.
Now, when you read the word ‘lab’, don’t imagine that it’s a big room filled with musical instruments. The kind of Beat Making Lab mentioned is actually quite a small one; an electronics studio small enough to fit in a backpack.
These Beat Making Lab projects have been set up in different countries such as Congo, Fiji, Panama and Senegal; and now, here it is in Ethiopia.
A training session was conducted by the founders of the Beat Making Lab last week for 20 young trainees who represent different music and art clubs as well as youth organizations throughout the city. The trainees were shown how to personally use the equipment and show train others how to use it. The youngsters spent two years learning how to use their voice and musical talents to create powerful messages through music. The project was done in collaboration with IntraHealth and Timret Lehiwot under the banner “Music + Youth+ Health = Ethiopia’s First Beat Making Lab”.
Some of the issues the youth focused on are Reproductive health and family planning, HIV/AIDS awareness, maternal and child health are among the issues the youth focused on. and so much more. At the end of the training, the group will produce a song and video that will be widely disseminated throughout Ethiopia.
The collaboration between IntraHealth and Beat Making Lab began last year in Senegal.
