The Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network (HoA-REC&N) held its 6th consecutive meeting from June 24th for five days at the Addis Ababa City Gulele Botanic Garden Center.
As part of the event, the Center’s newly constructed eco-friendly building, which will be used as its HQ, and is located on the premises of the botanic garden, was inaugurated in the presence of 200 high-profile dignitaries and advocates of HoA-REC &N. The design and shape of the building was influenced by efforts made to preserve the trees in its surroundings during construction. The building is the first of its kind in Ethiopia and represents HoA-REC&N’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Since its establishment in 2006, under the Addis Ababa University (AAU), HoA-REC&N has taken significant strides in linking academia with governmental and non-governmental development partners and continued to serve as the Secretariat for the Horn of Africa-Regional Environment Network (HoA-REN), a platform dedicated to address relevant regional environment issues as well as strengthening the collaboration between network members. The network comprises of higher learning and research institutions, indigenous Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). Moreover, the network facilitates, strengthens and advocates initiatives related to environmental conservation and natural resource management that aims to enhance environmental governance and sustainable development, which will improve livelihoods within the region.
