Ministry launches PFM programme

The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a three-year Participatory Forest Management programme (PFM) in adjacent areas of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) with the support of GIZ.
At the launching event State minister Sileshi Getahun said that the continued deforestation and intrusion of forest areas has revealed that the conventional forest management approaches could bear the desired result.
He said: “During the past year, we have come to realize that forest conservation activities and local communities have different objectives, perceptions and values with regard to forest management, the states’ excessive control and claims of the communities’ traditional rights have always been sources of conflict. Besides, the government has not put in place a sustainable forest management strategy in the country.”
