Orhan Abbas, Emirates Senior Vice President for Commercial Operations, made an official visit to Ethiopia for the first time to assess the company’s operations. “We have a really good network in Africa. We operate to 20 destinations, with a big market share on the continent, which continues to grow,” he stated.
Emirates is one of the biggest airlines in the Middle East and one of the fastest growing in the world. Flying to more than 130 destinations on six continents, the airline has yet to record a growth rate lower than 20 percent, according to some data.
“Every airline or every business has its own strategy; many airlines come from various parts of the world. At the end of the day, it has to make sense commercially; whatever you do must show profit. We believe in the strength of our staff and we believe in our products,” he told Capital.
The airline currently does not operate Dreamliners, although there are claims that it has placed orders with Boeing. “I cannot comment on the Dreamliner at the moment, but we do have the best combination of aircraft along with one of the best in-flight entertainment systems called “Ice”. We have suites and lounges in our aircraft as well as showers. It’s about innovation, organizational structure and a combination of a number of other things,” he said. He credited the success of the airline to many things, among them is exploring new markets.
Ethiopia was also mentioned as a very important market with a lot of potential. The Emirates country office stated that the airline continuously assesses the demand of the market and works accordingly to expand.
