GER launches “Running for a Cause” & Plan International Children’s Races


Great Ethiopian Run launched its annual fund raising campaign, just seven months into the 2013 Great Ethiopian Run International 10km Road Race, on Sunday 24th November 2013 bringing together a record 37,000 participants.

This time, the fund raising campaign, under the “Running for a Cause’ banner, set a goal of raising 1.4 million birr to be distributed to Social Protection and Welfare Programs run by four selected Ethiopian Organizations namely; the Nehemiah Autism Center, the Mekedonia-Home to the Elderly and Mentally Disabled, the Former Inmates Rehabilitation Center and the Dire Dawa Administration Women, Children and Youth Affairs.
According to GER Manager Ermias Ayele, the annual fund raising events raised nearly four million birr so far to benefit more than a dozen charities and this time the goal is to raise 1.4 million birr, bettering the 1,307,822 birr raised last year.
The launch coincided with the commencement of registration for the 6th edition of the Plan International Children’s Race with the theme “Because I Am a Girl” which expects 4,000 children’s taking part.
The “Because I Am a Girl” campaign aims to support millions of girls in Ethiopia by providing education and the skills they need to transform their lives. World, a global advocacy campaign first launched in 2009, also joined the partnership flying the “Child Health Now” banner. Registration for the three categories of Children’s races (aged 5, 8 and 11) opens Monday 7th October 2013 at the Hilton Hotel and GER Office with a registration fee of 50 birr per child.
