The production of new, locally-made films has slowed down recently, as observed by the absence or lack of newly displayed posters announcing their advent in cinemas around the city of Addis. At its peak, It used to be that new films had begun coming out twice a week.
But among the few released this past month is “Fikeren Yayachihu”, roughly translating into “Have you seen my love”. The film that is 1 hour and 45 minutes long took close to a year to complete and had a price tag of over 700,000 birr.
This new film hit several cinemas on October 17th and is all about losing one love and finding another. The story revolves around a young man who loses his wife in an accident. The main character, played by Mohamed Mifta, then starts leading a life of a lonely and miserable man. Then along comes a beautiful, carefree young woman played by Ruth Araya. Of course, the young woman finds employment at the same company where Mohamed’s character works.
Take a wild guess as to how it will end. Do they fall in love and live happily ever after… or will there be some bizarre twist to the tale? Can’t give away all the details, because you will have to go and see the ending for yourself at cinemas around town.
