Engsko Ethiopia, the only Ethio-Danish joint venture company, played host to Princess Marie Agathe Odile of Denmark as well as Holger K. Nielsen, Minister of Foreign Affairs on January 27, 2014 at the company’s millstone factory.

Engsko was first founded in Denmark in the 1890’s.  It started exporting millstones, which are large rocks used to grind teff, into Ethiopia during the 1950s. In 1999, three Ethiopian and three Danish investors got together and opened a factory in Ethiopia. In 2007 the company closed its Danish factory and moved its machines to Ethiopia to fully produce the grind stones here.
Now Engsko produces 50,000 millstones. Two thirds are for the local market, while the rest are exported to 42 countries; including Japan, Morocco and Austria.  The company has 55 employees and a revenue of 40-50 million birr.
Princess Marie tried a prototype of a small cereal grinder meant to be used by households before concluding the visit. She had originally come to visit the Danish Christian Foundation which she helps to fundraise for.  This was the first state visit by a member of the Danish royal family to Ethiopia.
