Prime Minister Hailemariam met with the US Deputy Secretary of State this week.
Discussions focused on the situation in South Sudan and the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
Burns said the US welcomed the agreement and that the US fully supported IGAD’s mediation efforts.
It would remain engaged in the process, he added. Both parties expressed concern over the involvement of third parties in South Sudan.
The US Deputy Secretary, who described Ethiopia as a valued partner, said he appreciated the efforts of Ethiopia to encourage peace and security in the region.
The Prime Minister briefed Burns on events in Somalia and on Ethiopia’s decision to join AMISOM.
He underlined the importance on the creation of strong governmental institutions there as the basis for peace in the country.
Burns told the Prime Minister that the US-Africa Summit to be held in June would be a “working” Summit and President Obama aimed to provide tangible and practical support for development processes in Africa.
Prime Minister Hailemariam expressed his appreciation of President Obama’s Power Initiative and was pleased to note that US companies were looking forward to do business in Ethiopia.
