Winners of the 31st Janmeda International Cross Country athletics championship booked their places in the 3rd African Cross country meeting to be held in Uganda.
With more than 600 athletes taking part, Commercial Banks dominated the junior events while Defense Force out shined in the senior events. In the women’s 6KM junior event Zerfe Limeneh and Alemitu Newi both from Commercial Banks took gold and silver respectively while Oromia Police diehard Shure Demise claimed the bronze. It was the second most admired event next to the men’s 12KM event where former world champion Ebrahim Jeilan featured a magnificent finishing performance.
Many thought grant Ibrahim would win the race with ease considering his contender’s experience in huge events. However, the hero of the day Yasin Hassan snatched the gold medal a second ahead of pre race hot favorite Dageu world champion 10,000m gold medalist who kicked off his much admired finishing pace a bit too late. “Had he started a bit earlier the gold would have been his and only his” Ibrahim’s admirers suggested later.  Ebrahim stood second in 35:21.30 followed by Hunegaw Mesfin in 35:36.10.
Defense Force’s rising star Genet Yalew represented Ethiopia in the third African Athletics Championships following her full domination in the women’s 8Km showdown. Although facing a big challenge from unattached Tadelech Bekele. Genet managed to cross the finishing line in 25:37.90 with Tadelech behind in 26:05.80 followed by Ababel Yeshaneh of Defense Force.
In the 8Km men’s Junior Yasin Hagi of Prison Police took gold in 22:52.60 with Defense Force Yehunelegn Adane  taking silver in 22:53.00 followed by Federal Police Muhager Hayredin.
