A new round of talks between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North rebels started this week on the conflict in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
Sudan’s chief negotiator, Ibrahim Gandour, said last week that the government negotiators would be going to Addis Ababa to find a solution for the root causes of the conflict and not to address its symptoms.
He said the Government accepted that the discussions should include political, humanitarian and security matters in line with the mandate of the AU High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP).
Khartoum says a political agreement would resolve all the problems in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.
The SPLM-N Secretary-General, Yasir Arman, said last month that the SPLM-N was ready to meet the Sudanese Government in the next round of talks, stressing that they wanted an end to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Blue Nile and South Kordofan, as well as a comprehensive political solution with the participation of all political forces and civil society groups in Sudan.
The two parties have twice failed to implement humanitarian agreements negotiated with the aid of UN agencies, the African Union and the Arab League.
