The third year of the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was celebrated on Wednesday April 2nd in the presence of high level government officials and guests.
The anniversary was celebrated at the Guba District, Metekel Zone of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State with the slogan “We Began to finalize”.
During the opening ceremony, Ethiopian Electric Power Manager Engineer Azeb Asnake said that the Grand Renaissance Dam is the major one among the massive hydropower projects that the government has given attention to and that the construction has been successfully in progress since the beginning with 30 percent of the hydro mechanical and electro mechanical activities complete.
Water, Irrigation and Energy Minister Alemayehu Tegeneu who was also present at the celebration reportedly said that the dam is a massive project that has been designed to lift Ethiopia out of poverty and backwardness and enable it to move forward with the development and prosperity.
Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinator of the National GERD Public Contribution Council Demeke Mekonnen stated that the day (April 2) is when Ethiopia began to take action to beat poverty and the day will always be remembered.
He also said that the support that the public is offering for the construction of the dam demonstrated that the country has the capacity to carry out massive projects.
The first phase of power production is also expected to be commenced from GERD by the next year.
Ethiopia will be generating 700 MW of electric power by the end of the GTP from the project that will generate 6,000 MW when it is fully completed
