Continuous economic growth is a major fixation of the established global order. Even though the idea of growing an economy nonstop is rife with all sorts of problems, (some of them major) the system is determined to stick to its customary irrationality by avoiding serious interrogations that might bring to question the issue of sustainability and more. For a start, in a world of finite resources, continuous growth that voraciously consumes non-renewable resources is an absurdity. Since the existing stupid and greedy system is based on a whole lot of crazy ideas such as this, it cannot be taken seriously, at least not by the thinking global beast (human mass) anymore. Here is another really really stupid assumption of the system: ‘Humanity has unlimited capacity to outmaneuver all obstacles.’ Wow!
Then why not rearrange the solar system or our galaxy-‘the milky way’ or even the whole known universe so that our greed based needs can be taken care of until thy kingdom comes! For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the physical sciences and naively but seriously think that humanity can potentially rely on outer space for resources, here is a simple illustrative/instructive example. In 1977 (37 years ago) two probes/spaceships, named ‘Voyager 1 & Voyager 2 were launched from the US to explore the far reaches of our solar system. In 2013, speeding about 1.5 million km per day, ‘Voyager I’ (around 500 kg) finally managed to exit our solar system for serious interstellar journey. It will pass by the first star (not the sun) after 40,000 years, even then if Voyager I decides to visit this star the detour will take another 28,000 years of speedy travel! So why the continuous insinuation about outer space being there for us? To be sure, space is being militarized by the aggressive elements of our species, but that is only few kilometers from earth. It seems one effect of space project is to distract and mesmerize the beast into blissful submission/subordination so that the presumed ‘all knowing’ manipulators of the world system can have a field day here on our tiny blue planet. Don’t forget knowledge gained from space explorations can be leveraged to further the killing (military) industry!
According to the narrative of the prevailing system, economic growth is sacrosanct, not to be questioned at all. For instance, even if there are millions of extra houses for the living poor and rich, the logic of economic growth blindly ascertains the rationality of building, yet more houses. For example, China has over 70,000,000 unoccupied houses/apartments, but still keeps on building units in the same areas! In fact what is not being addressed is the critical issue of distribution, not contribution (construction, production, etc.) But that is one of the things the greedy system doesn’t want the beast to dwell upon, so that it can go on ravaging the earth for ephemeral economic returns called profit. The deeply shared religious dictum of the system is ‘profit or death’! Adherents of the system (beneficiaries,…) aggressively condemn inquiries directed to the irrational concept of continuous economic growth without sufficiently examining reality via logical reasoning.
This blind worshipping of irrationality directed/led by bona-fide psychopaths has been and will continue to lead countries to destructive wars in which the global beast will only serve as fodder! In the highly industrialized countries of the North, the whole idea of unfettered continuous economic growth has visibly reached its limit, though it still has some distance to go on our side of the world. Nonetheless, the model we have been systemically indoctrinated to, is essentially based on the destructive and useless ideological foundation of unbridled greed, which cannot bring peace and stability to humanity! Today our attempt is to impress upon the global beast the unsustainable aspect of the continuous economic growth model by introducing and to some extent illustrating an opposite idea grounded on rationality, hence its rejection.  Following is a description of what a steady state economy should look like.
‘A steady state economy is an economy with stable or mildly fluctuating size. The term typically refers to a national economy, but it can also be applied to a local, regional, or global economy. An economy can reach a steady state after a period of growth or after a period of downsizing or degrowth. To be sustainable, a steady state economy may not exceed ecological limits.’ Herman Daly, one of the founders of the field of ecological economics and a leading critic of neoclassical growth theory, defines a steady state economy as: A steady state economy is an economy with constant stocks of people and artifacts, maintained at some desired, sufficient levels by low rates of maintenance ‘throughput’, that is, by the lowest feasible flows of matter and energy from the first stage of production to the last stage of consumption. A steady state economy, therefore, aims for stable or mildly fluctuating levels in population and consumption of energy and materials.’
The institutions of orientations/indoctrination (schools/universities/media/entertainment, etc.) are all preaching the idea of unsustainable economic growth without giving due attention to the constraints that are imposed by existing realities; amongst which, resource shortages, pollution (land, air, water) and population feature prominently. Unfortunately, instead of tackling these issues head on, the stupid system has only resorted to its highly considered and celebrated strategy of ‘burying ones head in the sand’! How irrational can one get? Employing a Marcusian expression we can only say the irrationality of the system’s rationality is truly terrifying! As the environment activist put it: “Somehow, we have come to think the whole purpose of the economy is to grow, yet growth is not a goal or purpose. The pursuit of endless growth is suicidal.” David Suzuki. Good Day!
