The Mexican Embassy in Ethiopia held a film screening at Edna Mall to celebrate the bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Mexico. The embassy screened a film entitled Frida on April 23rd which is based on the very famous Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
The film, where Salma Hayek plays the role as Frida, shows her struggle and passion for painting as well as her other passions.
The film also shows the character’s determination, as Frida had always struggled with health issues from a car accident when she was a teenager.
The film is well done and received several recognitions, including an Academy Award for Salma Hayek.
If you missed the screening of the film at Edna Mall, try to find the film from film rental places, because it is definitely a must watch, especially if you are an artist.
