The long awaited Addis International Film Festival finally kicked off on Saturday June 7 at the Italian Cultural Institute.
The opening session was attended by Amin Abdulkadir, Minister of Culture and Tourism and Giuseppe Mistretta, Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia.
Two films were featured at the day of the opening; Jeans and Marto, a film made by Caludia Palazzi and Clio Sozzani. The film tells the story of a young Ethiopian pastoralist who escapes his arranged marriage to fulfill his dream. It reviles the complexity of Ethiopia in the new millennium caught between modernity and tradition, pastoralist and urban lifestyles.
The other film that was screened was Sister, a film by Brenda Davis. The film tells the stories behind the statistics and exposes the global crisis of maternal and new born mortality.
The festival will stay on until June 11th 2014. You can check out the program on the festival’s website as well as both the Alliance Ethio-Francaise and Italian Cultural Institute web sites.
