Azeb Asnake, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power was awarded the Women in Construction Excellence Award on Wednesday May 28th. The CEO received the award at the end of the African Construction Exhibition held at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg, South Africa. She won the award under the Africa project leader category.
The Women in Construction Excellence award is created to celebrate the expanded role of women in the construction sector. It honors women who have pioneered the development of the African built environment and recognize the emerging leaders of the industry. This year’s Women in Construction Excellence Award had 11 finalists.
Azeb Asnake has a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Addis Ababa University and a Masters Degree in Water Resource Engineering from Tamper University of Technology in Finland.
Since 1986, after graduating from Addis Ababa University, Azeb has worked for Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority for 15 years in several positions including as head of the engineering department.
Before taking her position as the CEO of Ethiopian Electric power, Azeb also served as project manager of the highly controversial Gilgel Gibe III hydropower project.
“With rising education levels and general empowerment, women play an increasingly important role in economic development across the continent. Even though this is an overall positive development, typically male dominated sectors such as the construction industry still have a long way to go when it comes to establishing diversity,” organizers of the award event stated.
