Ambassador of France to Ethiopia Brigitte Collet, along with State Minister of Education Fuad Ibrahim, presented certificates to 20, 11th grade students who participated in a trial French language course given at Menelik II Secondary and Preparatory School.
It is an experiment with hopes of eventually introducing French to other public schools. The French Embassy is supporting the program by providing skilled staff.
The French courses are voluntary and they are not graded like other subjects in the regular curriculum. The school says they are happy with the program and plan to continue it next year at Menelik and with the support of the Regional Office of Education it will expand to two Addis school, and three in Dire Dawa, Harar and Debre Berhan.
The extension will be supported by a small team of three Ethiopian and two French teachers
