The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) signed a 2.5 billion birr agreement with China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) to design and construct a 102 km road around Omo River. The road project is aimed at linking the six sugar factories under the Omo-Kuraz project with each other and main roads.
ERA Director General, Zaid Weldegebriel, says it will make transporting sugar easier, enhance agriculture in the region and enable other factories to move their products as well.
The construction of the road is expected to be finalized in three years and will be carried out in two phases. The first one will cover 41.7 km of asphalt concrete running from the Omo river up to the Omo Sugar Factory ‘number 6 junction’ at a cost of 1.1 billion birr.
The project encompasses the construction of a 200 meter bridge, six small bridges, and 83 water tunnels.
The second phase of the project covers 60.6 km and will cost over 1.46 billion birr. This phase consists of 157 small bridges and will interconnect the Omo F4 and F6 sugar factories with the Hana-Jinka and Sawla Maji main roads.
