The new Addis-Adama toll road is to be opened today Sunday September 14th according to the Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise.
The 78km express way constructed by the Chinese Communication and Construction Company (CCCC) was officially inaugurated in early May but it was not open for the public yet.
The six-lane road, which is the first of its kind in the country, was constructed with 10.3 billion Birr, of which 57 percent is covered from Exim bank of China as a loan. The road is expected to significantly contribute in easing traffic jams on Akaki Kaliti road.
Vehicles that will use the road are said to be classified into eight categories and the drivers will be paying toll fees based on the loading capacities of their vehicles.
The vehicles categorized from one to six and considered to be automobiles or medium trucks or buses and will pay 50 cents per kilometer on their way from Addis Ababa to Adama town, which is 78km on the expressway, while heavy trucks with a single trailer will pay 60 cents per kilometer and heavy trucks with double trailers will pay 70 cents per kilometer.
