National election set for May 24

Ethiopians will be going to the polls on May 24, 2015. The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced the time table of the 5th national election at a press conference on Thursday October 30 at the Hilton Hotel. According to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia Chairperson Prof. Merga Bekana, 30 different duties have been included in the time table.
The time table was finally approved after a series of consultations were carried out with the different political parties that will be part of the election, a statement reads.
The announced time table sets dates for submission of candidature symbols as well as voter and candidate’s registration, among other things.
According to the time table, registration of candidates will take place from December 10, 2014 to January 6, 2015, while voters’ registration will be from the 9th to the 20th of January 2015. The political parties are expected to submit their symbols from November 24 to December 9, 2014.
The Board Chairperson stated at the press conference on Thursday that an agreement has been reached with the political parties, who during previous consultation sessions asked for a lengthy time for candidates and voters registration. He also said that the Board has almost finalized the preparation for basic materials needed for the election.
The result of the national election will be announced on June 22, 2015.
