A new 79 – km road will provide a vital link for the new Omo Kuraz Sugar Factories. The Ethiopian Roads Authority awarded the 1.66 billion birr road project to the Chinese company Sino Hydro Corporation Limited, on Tuesday October 28, 2014. The road will connect Mender and Hana with an asphalt road. The contractual agreement for the project was signed between Zaid Woldegebrial, Director General of ERA and Tian Hongjun, regional representative of Sino Hydro Corporation Limited. Speaking during the signing ceremony Zaid said that the new road would be built in South Omo Zone where there is no infrastructure. “Besides helping to move the products of the sugar factory, the new road will stop the traffic movement that passes through Mago National Park thus protecting the wild animals in the vicinity”.
The road will also link many kebeles and villages in the zone, it was indicated. According to the agreement the Mender-Hana road which is part of the Fourth Road Sector Development Plan will be finished within two years. The cost for the construction of the road is fully covered by the Ethiopian government. Sino-Hydor Corporation is ranked the 14th largest construction company in the world.
