New technology is allowing courts to review more cases. Electronic litigation, filling, video conferencing and transcribing software in the general and high courts have allowed Judges to see 100,000 cases a year.
There are 28 federal courts throughout Ethiopia that are using video conferencing. The courts have spent 50 million birr to expand the technology. Medhin Kiros, vice president of the Federal Court said, ten years ago their greatest challenge was sorting files and transcribing them. This limited Judges to seeing around 29,000 cases only per year.
He said that with the new technology they can hear regional court cases in Addis Ababa. Through video they are able to communicate with the plaintiff and the defendant. Plans are in the works to expand the technology throughout the country.
The court also aims to expand the Addis Ababa Child Friendly Criminal Bench to other regions.
