In March 1514 Armenian merchant Mateus was sent to Portugal by Ethiopian Queen Eleni as an ambassador to meet Portuguese King Don Manuel I. That, is said to be when the relationship between the two countries began.
Many people gathered at the National Theater on Monday December 8 to kickoff the celebration of 500 years between Ethiopia and Portugal.
The event, organized by the Embassy of Portugal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism had three performances for the evening; Pianist Vera Estevez from Portugal, our own star Pianist GirmaYifrashewa and a group drama performance from theAddis Ababa School of Theatre Arts.
If you want to join in on the fun you have time, the celebration will continue until the year 2020.
“The well documented beginning of the relations between our countries has motivated these commemorations, which shall take place until 2020, covering a period of six years,” said Portugal’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Antonio Luis Cotrim in his opening remark.
He hopes that the six-year commemoration will enhance the connection between the two people.
The celebration kicked off at the National Theater and is the beginning of many more events where people will rediscover the history between Ethiopia and Portugal. The upcoming event will be an exhibition themed Contemporary Bilateral Relations and it will open at the National Museum of Ethiopia on January 15.
