The Port of Ghoubet, which is being constructed on the west coast of Ghoubet Lake, will exclusively focus on the shipment of salt from Lake Assal, a salt lake located near the new port.
The project that commenced in November 2013 is being constructed by China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd, and consulting is undertaken by Technital Consulting Engineers Spa. According to Andrea Trentini, Site Engineer of the consultant firm, the project was expected to be completed by December 2015 but will be delayed until February 2016, because of a natural disaster that occurred a few months ago that destructed the work in progress.
The bulk terminal, EPC project, is being constructed at a cost of USD 64 million through a loan secured from China Exim bank.
According to officials at the project, the new bulk terminal port that is exclusively for salt will have a capacity to transfer six million tons per annum.
The salt export terminal at Lake Assal, which is 153meters below sea level, includes the establishment of a conveyor system which increases the performance of the storage area to the ships with a 1,000 meter belt conveying system and ship loading (vessel loader).
Road redevelopment stretching between the mineral extraction areas at Lake Assal, and the existing road, is also part of the project. According to officials at the consultant firm, the reconstruction of the link road near the mining area with a length of 8.4km and a renewal of eight kilometers of the existing road has to be done.
This terminal is located in an ideal area with a natural depth of over 15m. The size of ships that can dock at the terminal ranges from 40,000 to 100,000 DWT (Deadweight Tonnages).
