The latest news concerning the burning of the renowned Taitu Hotel has spurred many talks because it is a historical beacon. It may look old on the outside or be in a different part of town from all the modern five star hotels springing up in the city’s business districts but for its day it was the first of its kind and a lot of tourists and local came there and kept coming to bask in its character. In a country where historical places are valued and looked after due to the appraisal they are accorded from the public and foreigners alike, the burning down of this hotel is a major set-back. It needs to be reconstructed soon and as efficiently as possible. The question however, we want to raise here is whether some aspects of this hotel and any other place that had had the misfortune to suffer a burn down could have been saved from maximum damage had the fire brigade arrived a little earlier.
Many argue that fire brigade stations are situated far apart and that they suffer from lack of facilities to combat such attacks in a timely manner. The capacity attributed to fire trucks is fairly minimal as compared to other country’s fire brigade systems. The fire stations also lack the proper equipment and resources to handle crisis quickly although it has been improving lately.
Where situations demand for quick solutions to stop fires from spreading, first responders need to get to places quickly but this becomes a lot more difficult when roads are difficult to access and they are overcrowded with traffic.
There are also times where it’s very hard to access the fire brigade hotline since the phones are either busy or not answered. Even though there is no explanation as to why this happens, fire stations operators often complain about prank calls or receiving calls that toned to be redirected to other institutions because they are inappropriate. Such causes have urged the fire stations not to take some calls seriously and that makes the hotline more busy.
Fire departments need to prepare ahead of time before fires occur, taking steps to make the public more aware of how to prevent fires or what to do in case of an emergency. The public remains unaware about the most complex nature of appliances they use in their home and at work that can cause fires unless they are handled properly. Most of the areas that we reside and work in aren’t equipped with prevention and safety equipment and we don’t have fire drills. Often when fires start the entire place usually is burned down.
The area coverage that a single station takes on is very vast. Hence, if multiple calls were made to it concerning fire attacks the department is incapable of covering it all. The fire brigade’s  inability to curb the fire that is threatening to envelope everything has made them seem incompetent. Fire stations need more equipment and they need more locations so they can get to fires quickly and get the community involved in preparing themselves for handling a fire safely. Otherwise we face more loss of life and property.
We need to give fire fighters and first responders more funding so that they are able to put out fires and develop protocols that can prevent fire damage. We also need to have a better fire insurance system so that we can handle fire damage.
