Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Borge Brende told his Ethiopian counterpart Dr. Tedros Adhanom that Norway is contemplating placing Ethiopia among the six focus countries on its development cooperation program.
Foreign Minister Borge Brende announced his country’s intention when he visited Addis Ababa leading a Norwegian delegation on January 25, 2015. Brende said that his visit to Ethiopia is a demonstration of Norway’s commitment to further strengthen the bilateral ties with Ethiopia. He also noted that Norway remains committed to step up its cooperation with Ethiopia.
Dr. Tedros expressed his gratitude to Norway’s decision to make Ethiopia one of the six priority countries on its development cooperation program. This, Dr. Tedros said, would help Ethiopia’s efforts to realize a carbon-free middle- income country status by 2025.
The bilateral discussions of the two Foreign Ministers dwelt on other numerous issues of common interest. Both Ministers exchanged views on the promotion of Ethio-Norway partnership and on ways of expanding the breadth of the relations of the two friendly countries.
Dr. Tedros briefed Brende on Ethiopia’s renaissance journey, the ongoing IGAD-led peace talks to bring the South Sudanese warring parties to end the conflict and to advance the peace and stability. Dr. Tedros noted that Ethiopia will remain committed to advancing peace and stability in the horn of Africa region and that it attaches special importance to dialogue in resolving disputes.
Both sides reached a consensus to push forward jointly the cooperation of the two nations in the areas of climate change, education, private sector engagement, trade and investment.
