PM lays cornerstone for Awash-Woldiya-Hara Gebeya Railway project

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn laid the foundation stone for the Awash-Woldia-Hara Gebeya railway project this morning. The Ethiopian Railways Corporation has allocated 1.7 billion US dollars for the project.
The 375 km long railway line will link with the Mekele-Hara Gebeya – Woldiya railway project. Expected to take three years construction time, a Turkish company has signed an agreement to lay down the rail.
The project will connection the Northern part of the country with the rest of the Ethiopia and it would enhance travel to sea ports access in neighboring countries.
The railway will connect Afrar, Amhara and Tigray regional states. 
There will be 15 train stations along the route.  The trains will travel at a speed of 120 km/hr and will have the capacity to transport 750,000 passengers and 8.5 million tons of goods ever year.
