The 2015 UNDP Entrepreneurship Award presented over USD 61,000 to seven Ethiopian Entrepreneurs and two runner ups during a ceremony held at Sheraton Addis on March 5 in the presence of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Eugene Owusu, UNDP Resident Representative. Opening the award ceremony, Hailemariam highlighted the need to increase employment opportunities in Ethiopia given the increasing number of graduates coming into the job market each year. “Our government has given emphasis to develop micro and small enterprises as they are the most viable means to create new employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.”
He request UNDP to give Entrepreneurship training for more people to get jobs in the country. Eugene Owusu on his part said “World Bank 2014 report places Ethiopia 132 out of 189 countries in doing business and the government must intensify the work that has been done so far for creating good atmosphere for the Entrepreneurs.’’ The 2015 Entrepreneurship Award recognized entrepreneurs in seven categories that included Entrepreneur of the year, Environmental Sustainability Entrepreneur, Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Entrepreneur, Young Female Entrepreneur, Young Male entrepreneur, Rural Entrepreneur and Entrepreneurship Development Center (EDC) Start Up entrepreneur.
