Registration for the 2015 Women First 5km Run has already been closed, according to the Great Ethiopian Run. The race that is scheduled to be held on the coming Sunday of March 15 will see the participation of 10,000 women and girls.
This will be the 12th edition of the run and it will feature several well-known women personalities such as Fitsum Tsegaye, Tsedeniya G/Markos, Biruktawit Tegabu, Desta Hagos and Capital’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief Teguest Yilma among others.
This particular competition of the Great Ethiopian Run races focuses on empowering women and carries out several inspiring and uplifting messages. Besides shining a light on pressing women issues, the race is also used as a stepping stone for young and emerging female athletes.
Tiki Gelana is one example. She won the 5th edition of the all women’s race and later became the second Ethiopian female athlete to win Gold over the Olympic Marathon in London. Similarly, Aselefech Mergia won the women’s race twice in 2007 and 2009. She went on to win the 2012 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. Sule Utura won the race in 2010, eight months before winning her first title at the Great Ethiopian Run International 10kms race.
Some of the messages that are aloud during the previous races are: “Family Planning with Choice” by DK Ethiopia, “A Prosperous & Peaceful Life for All: The Future We Want” by UN Ethiopia, and “Because I am a Girl” by Plan International Ethiopia.
Haile Gebreselassie, Meseret Defar and Gete Wami regularly attend the race which has now become of the biggest women’s-only races in the world.
The first Women First 5km Run was held in May 2004 in light of recognizing the achievements of Ethiopia’s great female athletes and to support the broader changes regarding the role of women in Ethiopia’s economic and social life.
