Ethiopia has plans to build five new airports in the second period of the Growth and Transformation Plan set to begin in September.
The 457 million birr Hawassa Airport is among the airports that will be constructed. The airport will have the capacity to host large airplanes such as Boeing 777, the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise said.
Site clearing has also begun for the Jinka Airport that costs 571 million birr.
In addition to the new airports, the 1.2 billion birr expansion project that is currently underway at Bole International Airport is set to be finalized in GTP II.
Ethiopian airports current capacity remains insufficient to meet the annual 22 percent rise in demand, according to the enterprise.
Studies will be carried out to determine the location for brand new airport Ethiopia wishes to construct within 100 km radius from Addis Ababa.
