The Oromia Regional State has announced that it has allotted 1.5 billion birr to curb the possible impacts of the El-Nino induced drought in the region.
The regional state Communication Bureau Head, Fekadu Tesema, told journalists that the regional state has allotted 1.2 billion birr from its annual budget while the federal government has allotted a little more than 300 million birr to reduce the impact of the latest drought the country is faced with.
According to the bureau head, 127 Woredas in 15 zones of the Oromia regional state have been affected by the drought. At the onset, it was estimated 1.8 million people will be prone to drought, according to the head.  That figure has now surged to 2.9 million.  He also noted that the situation might be worse as over 3.7 million people are estimated to face food shortage by January 2016.
The bureau head said, no human life is lost so far due to the lingering drought. He also said that the regional state has been trying to minimize livestock possession via sale in order to prevent the possible loss of the cattle due to the drought.
