Matteo Renzi, the first Italian premier to come to Ethiopia, visited the Gibe III dam on July 14, 2015. The dam, which is 246 meters tall, has an installed production capacity of 1,870 megawatts of energy.
During the visit, Renzi highlighted that this amount of energy is equal to the energy produced by two nuclear power plants.
Eng. Azeb Asnake, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, said that the largest dam in Ethiopia in terms of production capacity is expected to start generating power in the next couple of weeks depending on the hydrology.
The Italian Prime Minister encouraged Italian companies in Ethiopia to continue to work vigorously and expressed great appreciation for Salini Impregilo, which is the project contractor.
“The Gibe III dam project is very important for Ethiopia and will greatly improve this country’s economy”, Salini Impregilo’s CEO Pietro Salini said during the event.
