Last weekend was entertainment galore by a list of outstanding musicians from around the world at Selam Festival. Despite some disappointments last weekend – pouring rain disrupted the festival and Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def didn’t turn up – this weekend is promising. The consistent entertainer and singer, Alemayehu Eshete, performed at the Alliance Ethio-Française on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
Alemayehu can entertain the young and old alike with his timeless songs. The musician is one of the few living legends in the music industry for decades. With his jazz and funk tunes, he came to be known as the “Ethiopian James Brown”. He had, and still brings, his own style that made him an icon in Ethiopian music history with traditional songs infused with the rhythms of rock-n-roll.
Alemayhu has a real stage presence with energetic and engaging performances that are sure to bring audiences off their seas. It is stated that alongside Mahmoud Ahmed, Tilahun Gessesse and Bizunesh Bekele, Alemayhu was one of the first to adopt elements of American music.
During the military rule in Ethiopia, Alemayehu was forced into exile. He forged a treasured reputation across Europe and the US as an exciting vocalist, often performing with Mahmoud Ahmed. He has released over 30 albums, including his highly regarded Ethiopiques series.
