Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWIE) announced a plan to install 300 MW of PV power in the country by 2020. The plan is part of the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) II, the second 5-year phase of a national 10-year plan created by the Ethiopian Government to improve the country’s economy.
It is reported that that the MoWIE is planning to build the first three PV plants with a combined capacity of 100 MW in Semera and Awash Arba, in the Afar Regional State. The three projects will require a total investment of approximately USD 630 million.
Ethiopia has had a very limited success with solar energy to date. In late 2013, the MoWIE reported that over 13,200 residential PV systems were installed through the country’s rural electrification program. The program, which ran from December 2012 to November 2013, saw residential PV systems installed at 25,000 homes in rural populations across the country
