The Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA), the federal tax collection and customs clearing body, is to move its Customs Clearing Station, currently located around Kality to Sebeta area. Sources at ERCA told Capital that to adapt to new rail infrastructure that links Addis Ababa with the ports of Djibouti, the authority has planned to move its Kality customs office to Sebeta. Located 25km west of the city, Sebeta is part of the Oromia Special Zone surrounding Addis Ababa and will be the central hub for the national railway system, when complete.
The current Kality Customs station was established inside Commet Transport Terminal about a decade ago when the Addis Ababa Lager Customs Office stopped operations. ERCA has customs warehouses and stations in different parts of the country but the Kality Station is one of the most significant.
The new customs station in Sebeta will be constructed in time for the commencement of the railway system, according to sources at ERCA. Currently, the 748 km railway line project that connects Djibouti and Addis Ababa is on the final stages.
Sebeta will be the major cargo and freight terminal in the future, connecting central Ethiopia to other parts of the country with rail lines in every direction.
