Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tedros Adhanom conferred with Dr. George William Vella, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, on September 19, 2016, at the 71st Session of the United Nations General assembly in New York, where the two sides stressed the need to forge cooperation on migration and refugees.

Noting that his country would soon take over the presidency of the council of the European Union, the Maltese Foreign Minister Dr. George William Vella, said Malta is keen to cooperate with Ethiopia in particular and Africa at large.

While also noting that Malta is both a transit and destination for refugees, the Minister underscored the importance of addressing migration on three key areas: bringing out problems related to migration into the spotlight, working on the agreed plan of action and launching funds as required.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tedros Adhanom noted that Ethiopia is an origin, transit and destination for refugees across the region, adding that his country has pursued an open door policy for refugees from neighboring countries.

Acknowledging that migration is a global challenge, Dr. Tedros stressed the need to take concrete steps and thereby translate political commitment into action.
