Ethiopian Football’s first ever testimonial match takes place at the newly built Hawassa International stadium today in honor of Mulugeta Meheret. Host Hawassa Town takes on defending champion Saint George in a head on clash while invited Ethiopia Bunna encounters Sidama Bunna.
With seventeen years in the Ethiopian Premier League on three teams: Saint George, Dedebit and his home team Hawassa Town, the tall yet humble midfielder Mulugeta is highly regarded as the most popular player the Debub Region ever produced and the most disciplined in the league with just one yellow card throughout his carrier. Winner of the Cecafa championship title, four Premier League titles twice with Saint George and one each with Dedebit and Hwassa, four knock-out trophies and twice named Best Player of The Season, Mulugeta rubs shoulders with few of all time Ethiopian Football greats as the one of the best among his generation.
Mulugeta deserves to become the first ever Ethiopian Footballer with a testimonial match to be organized to his name. Though the Southern Region Football Federation and Hawassa Town are the major players organizing the big event, the mid fielder is considered one of the most popular footballers in Ethiopia. “I will drive all the way to Hawassa with four of my friends to be part of the testimonial,” remarked Desalegn Assefa a veteran Ethio-Electric supporter. “You need not only discipline and charm but also to be lucky enough to be honored like Mulygeta,” Desalegn added.
