Ethiopian national team former defensive midfielder Getu Teshome has been appointed coach of Dedebit FC women’s side. He replaces ‘Coach of The Year’ Ferew Solomon whose contract expired at the end of last season. Ethiopian Football’s most decorated coach Asrat Haile is the club’s technical director, former national team head coach Yohannes Sahle the senior team head coach, Getu takes the women’s side, former national team players Debrom Hagos and Bekele Elehu are the first and second coaches of the youth team, Dedebit became the first ever Ethiopian club to be led by a bunch of professional footballers who have played at the highest levels.
Despite leading Dedebit to its first back to back Women’s league and breaking NegedBank’s domination of the league, Ferew, who never played football at the professional level but earned a sport science degree from Haremayaa University was expected to obtain a lucrative new contract to stay with the club. However the two sides were not able to come to a mutual agreement. Geto Teshome was promoted after serving time on the youth team. Sources disclosed that Dedebit offered a 75,000 Birr signing bonus along with a gross monthly salary of 30,000 Birr but the deal was unacceptable to Ferew.
Many critics that follow women’s football suggest that the former Saint George, NegedBank and Insurance midfielder Getu have more than enough experience in the sport but face a big challenge from NegedBank to retain the double. So it looks like four teams could win this year, Dedebit, Ethiopia NegedBank, Hawassa Town and Addis Ababa Town.
