Ethiopian Women’s league season opens today

Defending champion Dedebit FC and former champions Ethiopia NegedBank are hot favorites to dominate their respective groups, Ethiopian Women’s annual soccer championship new season opens today at Addis Ababa stadium. Addis Ababa Town declined to participate during  the final days before the season’s start.

The 6th Women’s championship brings together twenty sides in two groups each comprised of ten sides. Dedebit the top seed for group “A” has the strongest side with nearly a dozen national players in the squad. Losa Abera and Birtukan Gebrekristos are leading the champions. They face Ethiopia Bunna in the season opening today while group “B” heavy weight Ethiopia NegedBank takes on Saint George.

The opening fixtures also bring the South derby match between former champions Hawassa Town and Sidama Bunna. The two regional rivals encounter as usual is much expected among fans for both are famous producing young talent every new season.

The shocking news in Women’s soccer development is that of Addis Ababa Town’s stand of declining participation. The club had signed a number of renowned players to form a strong squad and head Coach Asrat Abate had a yearlong contract.
