Creative writing in Ethiopia is being promoted through a new award, events and trainings running throughout the year to promote writing and reading.
Many of the trainings focus on children and youth but the HOHE Award through promoting reading culture in the country aims to increase the demand for literary works and ultimately encourage writers and authors to produce more and better stories.
There are four prizes in total; fiction, poetry, children’s books and the fourth award will recognize actors that have contributed to the growth of the reading culture including book critics, book clubs, libraries and so on.
The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony expected to be held by the end of April 2017.
Besides the award ceremony, other events such as HOHE Children’s Book Week which will be from April 17 to 24, 2017, HOHE International Literary Festival from June 22-30, 2017 as well as a monthly literary seminar and HOHE Women writers forum, will be held.
The HOHE Award has an organizing team, which consists of prominent authors, publishers, academicians, non-profit leaders and journalists. The organizing team will have the overall mandate of overseeing the award procedures and leading the process in an independent way. The organizing team will select judges and juries who will be working to select the books for the award. There will be a three person panel of judges and juries for all the three categories.
